Easy Stir fry vegetables!

Hey welcome to my website. This blog provides a nice a simple idea to use your veggies! a nice quick simple way to stir-fry your vegetables. I also include suggestions for what to add to it! You will notice that I don’t specify amounts of vegetables this is deliberate! I tend to use what I have in my kitchen and I prepare the vegetables according to how much I have and what I want to go into the stir-fry. Use trial and error, make your stir-fry to your own taste. You will soon get used to quantities etc the more you try this simple dish.


What do you need?

When I make stir-fry vegetables I make sure I have the following:

  1. a good oil – sunflower, vegetable etc are all good as they have what is called a high smoke content (ie the oil can be heated to higher temperatures than say olive oil. A good stir-fry needs very hot oil!
  2. A good frying pan or wok – I like to use a frying pan with a good base.
  3. A good mixture of nice fresh vegetable such as carrots, broccoli or cauliflower, tomatoes, beansprout, mushrooms, sweet peppers, onions and garlic.
  4. Seasoning – salt pepper, herbs and spices, grated ginger – whatever suits your taste buds!


The first thing I do when making a vegetable stir-fry is to put a small amount of oil in the pan and turn it on. Whilst it is hotting up I prepare the vegetables my slicing them thinly. This can take some time so you might want to prepare your vegetables first. I prefer to let my oil hot up first – that way I can keep an eye on the oil and I can start to add any chopped up vegetables.

I tend to put the onion and the hard vegetables in first (carrots, broccoli etc) stir them and add the softer vegetables such as the mushroom, sliced garlic, tomatoes etc. A stir-fry is a quick dish to cook and you should aim to be finished within 5 minutes. Add lemon or lime, salt and pepper before the cooking process is completed.

What to eat with your stir-fry:

For me, it depends on the time of day! If this is for lunch, then I am more likely to serve my stir-fry with a salad or with warmed wholemeal rolls. It is up to you.

If I am making dinner, then I find boiled white rice goes very well with this dish. Alternatively, I like to add noodles. Simply follow the cooking instructions on the pack of your noodles, when they are ready, strain and add to the stir-fry. Or simply serve them together – add the noodles to your plate and add the vegetables on top. If you don’t have noodles, try pasta (eg spaghetti or whatever pasta you have in your cupboard!)

If you don’t have noodles, you can also serve your stir-fry with cous cous – just prepare the cous cous according to the instructions. Serve when ready.

Spicing up your stir-fry:

The more experienced and confident you get at preparing a stir-fry you may want to get more creative! Try soaking some soy chunks in hot water before you begin your stir-fry. Whilst they are soaking, make a marinade. I like to use olive oil, chopped garlic, hoisin sauce and lime juice. I like to add grated garlic in my marinade. You should experiment, for instance, if you don’t have hoisin sauce try adding soy sauce or sweet chilli sauce.

Another idea is instead of soy chunks, try tofu. Prepare the tofu and drop them into the marinade. I sometimes make my marinade the day before as I like the tofu to absorb all the flavours!

Once your vegetables are nearing the end of the cooking process add the soy chunks or tofu stir.

I also like to add some herbs and spices – again this will come down to personal taste. A like to add a Chinese 5 spice but this will depend on how you want your stir fry to taste. If you like your food spicy hot also try adding chilli flakes or even a chilli pepper.

If you have enough sauce you can pour this into the frying pan right at the end. Sprinkle some sesame seeds over the food once you have served the dish.


Hopefully you love this idea for a quick and nutritional meal! Stir frying your food is a healthy way to preserve the nutrients in the vegetables. As you only use a small amount of oil, the fat content in this dish is quite small.

  2. Thanks for this awesome post on preparing stir fry vegetables. I like the fact that preparing a stir fry is a quick fix to satisfy hunger while no satisfying quality. When you need to prepare something real quick for the family, stir fry comes to the rescue because it does not take time at all and you decide on the ingredients you want to use to get the tasty you want.

    • Hi Jude, thank you for your comment.  Yes, I totally agree, not only is a stir fry a very healthy option it is also quick to do and you can vary the taste by using the different vegetables you already have to hand!

Thank you for shining a light on the underappreciated “kitchen sink” stir-fry!  I am continually surprised at how many people have never considered doing this with their “whatever I’ve got” supplies.  I have also been know to throw in leftover potatoes and meat/poultry/fish for a one-dish meal. I add the cooked protein at the very end so avoid drying it out, just long enough to heat it up.  I’m also the person who takes home the unfinished veggie platter from the party so I can stir-fry that as well.  I hope your post will inspire people to be more creative with their cooking.
